Capstone Project

For my Capstone Project, I was fortunate enough to be a mentor in the Church World Service's Mentorship Program. The purpose of the mentorship was to assist young refugees as they were adjusting to life in the United States. As a mentor, my main focus was to aid my mentees, as they work to achieve specific goals. Some mentees focused on preparing for college, while others focused on different goals, like maintaining financial stability or creating a resume. I was able to pull from my own experiences, as a college student, however, while preparing for meetings, I had to educate myself on certain topics, like how to prepare and take the General Education Development (GED) test.

Church World Service is a non-profit organization that focuses on promoting specific issues, both on an international and national scale. Outside of immigration and refugees, they focus on causes like climate change and disaster preparedness and have programs on almost every continent. Their work strives to create a safer and inclusive global society and to protect those who are most in need.

This organization's emphasis on global awareness helped me with the continuous development of my global perspectives. Speaking with employees of CWS, they discussed the experiences that the refugees and their families have had to endure on their journey to the U.S. This mentorship allowed me to realize that I have been fortunate with the environment that I have grown up in. I hope to continue participating in work like this in the future.
